Reduced Homeowner Maintenance as a Consequence of Home Price Insurance

Home price insurance can inadvertently cause homeowners to reduce their maintenance efforts. Since the insurance protects them against financial losses from a decline in property value, the financial incentive to invest time and money in upkeep is weakened. The homeowner still bears the full cost of maintenance but shares the benefit (a stable property value) with the insurer, leading to a rational decision to underinvest in property care.
