Reflexes vs. Instincts
Both reflexes and instincts are innate (unlearned) behaviors that organisms are born with, but they differ in complexity and the brain centers involved. Reflexes are simpler motor or neural reactions to specific environmental stimuli (e.g., knee-jerk reflex), involving specific body parts and more primitive centers of the central nervous system like the spinal cord and medulla. Instincts are more complex patterns of behavior triggered by broader events (e.g., maturation or seasons), involve movement of the whole organism (e.g., migration), and involve higher brain centers.
