In the related study, logistic regression analysis identified four variables that had a significant effect in predicting the likelihood of a student failing the studied course (college level introductory biology):
- University of Washington GPA
- SAT Math score
- SAT Verbal Score
- Student age

This was used to identify "high-risk" and "low-risk" student groups, to see the effect of the treatment on both groups.
