College students in social organizations are often exposed to environments with high alcohol availability, leading to more frequent consumption. For example, men residing in fraternity houses consume more alcohol than both non-resident fraternity members and students who are completely unaffiliated with Greek life.

Environmental Factors in Fraternity Alcohol Use

College students involved in sororities or fraternities are more likely to engage in binge drinking. Furthermore, survey data indicates that individuals affiliated with Greek life are at a higher risk of developing symptoms of Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD) later in life.

In a study on college students, for both men and women social camaraderie was the most reported reason for drinking. Therefore, social reasons such as parties, gatherings, and more are a big influence on why college students drink the amount that they do. Social motives are high predictor of alcohol consumption.

The frequency of social interaction is positively associated with higher rates of binge drinking among college students. For instance, students who report zero binge drinking occasions tend to report less social intimacy than those who binge drink, suggesting that social camaraderie acts as a strong motivator for alcohol consumption.
