Autobiographical memory, which is sometimes used interchangeably with episodic memory, refers to memory for specific life events. These memories can contain both episodic elements (the experience of the event) and semantic elements (facts about the event). For example, remembering a birthday party involves an episodic memory of the event itself, while knowing you received a specific gift is a personal semantic memory.

Reminiscence bump

Memory of highly shocking and emotionally charged events. It is not necessarily that you were there when the event happened, but often how you heard about the event. A recent, notable and tragic example is people's recalling of first hearing about the 9/11 attacks.

Flashbulb memory

Most individuals find it extremely difficult, if not impossible, to recall mundane details from their past, such as what they wore or ate on a specific, non-significant day years ago. This difficulty in recalling the specifics of everyday life events illustrates the typical limitations of autobiographical memory.

Example of Typical Autobiographical Memory Limitations

Hyperthymesia, also known as highly superior autobiographical memory, is an extremely rare condition where individuals can recall an immense number of their life experiences in vivid detail. As of 2006, scientific studies had identified fewer than 20 people with this ability. The condition typically manifests during adolescence, although there are rare cases of children exhibiting it before their tenth birthday.

The ability to recall specific, detailed events from one's personal past, such as a childhood birthday party, serves as a common example of a vivid autobiographical memory.
