Removal of the Bereavement Exclusion for Major Depressive Disorder in DSM-5

A key example of the loosened diagnostic criteria in the DSM-5 is the removal of the "bereavement exclusion" for major depressive disorder. Unlike the DSM-IV, which prevented a diagnosis if symptoms were due to normal grief from losing a loved one, the DSM-5 allows for such a diagnosis. This change means that the natural process of grieving can now be classified as a depressive disorder.
