In Chapter 16, Poem 5 of the Mokhtar Nameh, Attar emphasizes the necessity of spiritual retreat and submission to the Divine. The poem advises the seeker to abandon evil deeds and instead 'spread the prayer rug of submission' (سجادهٔ تسلیم). Having witnessed the futile ways of the masses (شیوهٔ خلق), the spiritual traveler is urged to sever ties with worldly distractions, 'draw a line across them all,' and redirect their entire focus towards God.
