Representing Future Interests in Policy

Since individuals who will live 100 years from now cannot vote, participate in markets, or directly influence today's environmental policies, their interests seem to be unrepresented. Briefly explain the primary mechanism or principle that nonetheless compels current societies to consider the long-term environmental welfare of these future individuals.
