A study was conducted to estimate the extent of differences in mental health between parents of children with and without disabilities. Data was collected from the Growing up in Australia: The Longitudinal Study of Australian Children (LSAC), a nationally representative study tracking the development of two cohorts of children: the Birth Cohort for children less than two years old, and the Kindergarten Cohort for children four to five years old. Each cohort has been followed up every two years on family demographics, parenting, health, and wellbeing. The parent sample was limited to the child’s primary carer, which in most cases was the child’s biological mother. The LSAC data is linked to the parent Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS) records, which is part of Australia’s universal health insurance scheme covering medical services mainly outside the hospital setting.
