Studying Parental Wellbeing
The Kessler Psychological Distress Scale Kessler (K6) scale was used to evaluate the mental health of parents of children with disabilities. The parents rated the frequency of their feelings on six common symptoms of distress (nervousness, hopelessness, restlessness, fidgeting, worthlessness, sadness) in the past four weeks on a five-point scale. Results found that the prevalence of parental mental health problems increased as children grew older: for children with disabilities, 28.57% in children aged four to 5 years old to 44.92% in children aged sixteen to seventeen; for children without disabilities, 19.61% to 25.83%. After controlling for demographic and socioeconomic factors, parents of children with disabilities were found on average 2.10 times more likely to experience mental health issues.
