Studying Mental Health Service Utilization and Costs

The MBS item number and total service fees (including government subsidy and patient out-of-pocket costs) were used to identify out-of-hospital mental health service utilization by parents of children with disabilities. The results found more out-of-hospital mental health service utilization and higher mental health service costs among parents of children with disabilities than without. They were found to use 1.27 extra events of mental health services with $150.46 more for these services biennially with children aged twelve to seventeen years. The results were consistent even after controlling for demographic and socioeconomic factors. However, differences were not observed among parents of children aged four to eleven years old.
