Mental Health Service Utilization and Costs for Parents of Children with Disabilities

In a study on parents of children with disabilities (Chen et al., 2023), MBS item numbers and total service fees (including government subsidies and patient out-of-pocket costs) were used to identify out-of-hospital mental health service utilization. The results demonstrated greater utilization and higher mental health service costs among parents of children with disabilities compared to those without. Specifically, parents of children aged twelve to seventeen with disabilities used 1.27 extra events of mental health services, incurring $150.46 more in costs for these services biennially. These findings remained consistent after controlling for demographic and socioeconomic factors. However, significant differences in service utilization and costs were not observed among parents of younger children aged four to eleven.
