Residential Project Deposit Limits

Some jurisdictions cap the amount a contractor may collect before work begins on a residential home-improvement job. For example, a state could limit the initial payment to $750 or 15% of the total contract price, whichever is smaller. If a contractor collects more than the legal limit, the contract may become unenforceable and the contractor may face fines or licensing action. Before taking any deposit, check the statute that applies where the work will be performed. Commercial projects often have different rules, but local requirements should still be reviewed.
