Restructuring Healthcare Systems to offer Telehealth Resources

Before the pandemic, there were two major obstacles for telehealth to overcome in order for it to be widely used – reimbursement and lack of broadband access. Due to the stay-at-home orders in many states, many programs have begun reimbursement as well as widespread telehealth usage in order to manage the surge in visits. Also, in order to address the lack of broadband in some areas, over-the-phone visits are becoming more commonplace. For example, Munson Healthcare, a rural Michigan healthcare system, has utilized telehealth during the pandemic by offering virtual or over-the-phone telemedicine visits to patients across 530 providers. This is a complete turnaround in rural healthcare because before this restructuring, none of the 530 providers offered telehealth resources. This unprecedented implementation of telehealth in rural healthcare systems has been fast and effective. Not only has this been useful in the scope of the COVID-19 pandemic but could be used to address the healthcare disparity between rural and urban areas if necessary restructuring is done.
