Results of Experiment 2 of "Correcting the unknown: Negated corrections may increase belief in misinformation"

  • Again, subjects took note of the target concept "less often in the corrections condition than in the exposed/no correction condition, but still more often than in the not exposed/no correction condition," demonstrating the presence of the continued influence effect.
  • Again, individuals exposed to the target concept generally mentioned it more frequently than those who were not.
  • However, while subjects who received the negated correction or no correction mentioned the target concept more than when subjects received the replacement, there was no significant difference between the negated correction and no correction.
  • Additionally, it was found that negated correction neither increased belief (as was shown in Experiment 1) nor reduced belief.
