Results of Experiment 1 of "Correcting the unknown: Negated corrections may increase belief in misinformation"

  • Generally, individuals exposed to the target concept mentioned it more frequently than those who were not.
  • Additionally, individuals who were met with no correction mentioned the target concept more than individuals who were met with negated corrections, while individuals who were met with negated corrections mentioned the target concept more than individuals who were met with replacement corrections.
  • The negated corrections reduced participants' belief among participants who were exposed to the target concept and increased participants' belief among participants who were not exposed to the target concept.
