Roommate Cleaning Dilemma

Two roommates, Alex and Ben, must decide independently whether to spend their Saturday cleaning their shared apartment.

  • If both clean, they both enjoy a very pleasant, clean apartment.
  • If neither cleans, they both have to live in a messy apartment, which they dislike.
  • If one cleans while the other relaxes, the cleaner feels resentful for doing all the work, while the other enjoys a clean apartment for free. For each roommate, the best personal outcome is to have a clean apartment without doing any work, and the worst personal outcome is to do all the cleaning alone.

Analyze this situation. Explain the likely outcome if both Alex and Ben make their decision based purely on their own individual self-interest without communicating. Then, discuss how a negotiated agreement could lead them to a better, mutually preferred outcome.
