Concept

Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum

The rough endoplasmic reticulum is covered with ribosomes that are bound to the cytoplasmic side of the membrane. The ribosomes synthesize proteins that are inserted into the membrane of the rough endoplasmic reticulum. These proteins bud off into transport vesicles to be further processing or go to the membranes of a different organelle. They could also leave the cell.
