Sanai's Metaphor of the Perfume Seller and the Blacksmith in Section 9 of the Hadiqat

In Section 9 of the Hadiqat al-Haqiqah, Sanai uses the metaphor of the perfume seller (attar) and the blacksmith (haddad) to illustrate the power of companionship. He explains that associating with a virtuous person is like visiting a perfume shop: even if you do not receive musk, you are graced by its fragrance. Conversely, associating with the ignorant or 'commoners' is like being near a blacksmith: even if the sparks do not burn your clothes, the smoke and soot will inevitably darken them. This concept emphasizes that social influence is passive and unavoidable.
