This prose anecdote from Jami's Baharestan satirizes self-interested piety and one-sided partnership. A worshipper finishes his prayer and asks God to admit him to Paradise and spare him from Hellfire. An old woman standing behind him overhears and asks God to make her a partner in whatever he is seeking. To test her, the man abruptly changes his petition, praying to be hanged and whipped to death — inviting her to share the hardship as well. She at once shifts her own prayer, asking only for forgiveness and protection from what he now seeks. When the man objects, she is exposed as willing to share his ease but not his pain, and the closing verse condemns the greedy soul who wants to partake of another's reward without bearing any of its cost. The point is a moral lesson: a partnership claimed only in comfort and abandoned in suffering is no fair partnership at all.
