In this poem from Chapter 7 of the Mokhtar Nameh, Attar describes the mystical state of remaining after the annihilation of the individual self. In this state, the mystic experiences a selfless 'I-ness' that is entirely liberated from worldly dualities, such as darkness and light, or friendship and enmity. Furthermore, the mystic attains absolute security from the ego, which is the source of all spiritual conflict and division. By overcoming the ego, the mystic moves beyond personal attachments and antipathies, residing in a state of divine peace and unity.
