In Poem 54 (Chapter 8) of the Mokhtar Nameh, Attar addresses the central Sufi paradox of union through self-annihilation (fana). The lover experiences ultimate rest only after becoming 'naught.' However, this leads to a spiritual dilemma: if reaching the Beloved requires complete non-existence, the lover no longer exists as an independent self to experience that arrival. Thus, the ultimate union is achieved only through the complete erasure of the individual ego.
