Self-Annihilation and the Realization of Nothingness in Attar's Mokhtar Nameh (Chapter 5, Poem 10)

In Chapter 5, Poem 10 of Attar's Mokhtar Nameh, the poet emphasizes the central Sufi principle of self-annihilation (fana) and the spiritual realization of nothingness. The verses counsel the seeker to entirely abandon their ego and any claim to independent existence, urging them to "be nothing." By achieving this absolute negation of the self, the individual is freed from all earthly attachments, burdens, and claims of ownership (as stated, "nothing will belong to you"). The poem illustrates that true spiritual liberation and the shedding of illusions require the complete dissolution of the personal ego in the presence of the Divine.
