In Chapter 35, Poem 8 of Attar's Mokhtar Nameh, the concept of fana (self-annihilation) is explored through the all-consuming nature of divine love. The speaker describes how the 'sorrow of love' strips them of their entire being—their heart, their religion, and all intellectual faculties of 'doubt' and 'certainty.' This absolute devastation is so complete that the lover is left with no physical or spiritual space to even mourn their state (such as scattering dust upon their head). The poem illustrates that when one is confronted with the true countenance of the Beloved, the earthly self is completely erased, leaving 'no place upon the earth' for the lover's individual, independent existence.
