Self-Disgrace as the Sign of the Spiritual Path in Attar's Mokhtar Nameh (Chapter 20, Poem 4)
In this poem from the Mokhtar Nameh, Attar addresses a seeker (dervish) who asks for a sign of being on the true spiritual path. Attar explains that the primary indicator is an increasing awareness of one's own 'disgrace' or shortcomings (roswaee). As the traveler advances further on the journey, they do not gain pride, but rather see more of their own flaws, imperfections, and unworthiness.
