Setup of the Stanford Prison Experiment
The experiment was staged in a mock prison constructed in the basement of Stanford University's psychology building. To increase the study's realism, participants assigned to the prisoner role were unexpectedly 'arrested' at their residences by actual Palo Alto police officers, processed at a police station, and then transported to the simulated prison.
