Dataset

Share of Non-Agricultural Labor Force (1300–2019)

This dataset illustrates the long-term structural transformation of various economies over 800 years. The data shows a consistent rise in the non-agricultural share of the workforce across all countries, with a particularly sharp increase over the last century and a half. The data is compiled from several sources, including Tirthankar Roy's 2005 working paper on colonial India, a 2009 publication by Pedro Lains and Vincente Pinella on European agricultural development since 1870, along with 'World Development Indicators'.
