Side Effects from Long-Term Use of SSRI's

Side effects are likely a result of the pharmacological structure of SSRIs. There is a common property of blocking SERT found in all SSRIs, but there is also a secondary characteristic (in binding profile) which is hypothesized to account for variability in individuals' efficacy and tolerance.

Side effects may include:

  • emotional blunting
  • cognitive impairment
  • bone fractures
  • prolonged overall bleeding time
