Signal detection theory has significant practical applications, notably in improving the accuracy of air traffic controllers. Controllers must identify and track plane signals, or 'blips,' on a radar screen that contains numerous other distracting signals. The theory was originally developed to enhance their ability to perform this critical task of distinguishing important signals from background noise.

Types of Perception

Perception is an active interpretation of sensory data that is significantly affected by a variety of personal and social factors. An individual's beliefs, values, prejudices, cultural background, and unique life experiences all interact to shape how they consciously perceive the world around them.

Factors Influencing Perception

The discrepancy between what sensory receptors detect (sensation) and what is consciously experienced (perception) can be explained by several psychological mechanisms. Concepts such as sensory adaptation, selective attention, and signal detection theory help explain why certain sensory stimuli are perceived while others are not.

The perception of smell, or olfaction, is the process of perceiving smell. Sense of smell occurs when an odor binds to a receptor within the nose, transmitting a signal to the olfactory system. The sense of smell has been deemed important to survival efforts. The loss of a sense of smell can result from some injuries or illnesses. The loss of smell has been gaining traction as an early indicator for some neurodegenrative diseases in research, and has been identified as an early symptom of COVID-19.

Touch is the result of the complex somatosensory system of sensory neurons and neural pathways. The general umbrella term for touch is the somatic senses, or somesthetic senses. The perception of touch through movement is known as proprioception, while the perception of touch through objects is known as haptics. Haptic perception is achieved through touching objects or surfaces.

The sense of taste is perception of flavor. The perception of taste occurs when a substance within the mouth reacts chemically with taste receptor cells located on taste buds in the oral cavity, primarily on the tongue.

Multi-modal perception refers to the ability of the nervous system to combine all different inputs from the various senses to create enhanced detection or identification of a particular stimulus. An example of multi-modal perception is lipreading.

The perception of sound is called hearing, or auditory perception. The perception of sound happens through the perception of noise through vibrations, changes in pressure within the surrounding medium, through the ear (in humans).

An unpleasant sensory experience that comes from harmful, intense, and/or damaging stimuli. 

Pain

Social perception is the act of identifying and utilizing social cues to assess social rules, social roles, relationships, context, and the characteristics of others. Social perception is the study how and why people form impressions and make inferences about other people. Social perception also refers to how people learn about other's feelings or emotions through what they gather from aspects such as physical appearance, communication, facial expressions, tone, and hand gestures. The 4 main components of social perception are observation, attribution, integration, and confirmation.

Vision, also known as visual perception, is the ability to interpret the surrounding environment by constructing a mental representation of the world from light reflected by objects. The physiological components that enable this process are collectively called the visual system. In humans, vision is a particularly well-developed sense.

Attention is a critical factor that influences perception by determining which sensory stimuli are consciously processed. It functions as a filter, enabling an individual to focus on specific information from the environment while disregarding other stimuli, thereby shaping what is ultimately perceived from what is merely sensed.

Motivation can influence perception by shifting a person's ability to distinguish an expected, meaningful stimulus from background noise. For example, someone waiting for an important phone call may think they hear a phone ringing while taking a shower even when it is not ringing.

The collective experiences shared by people within a specific cultural setting can significantly influence how they perceive the world. This extends beyond vision, as research has shown that cultural factors also affect other senses. For example, the ability to identify an odor, and to rate its pleasantness and intensity, has been found to vary cross-culturally.

Fundamental personality traits can influence how an individual perceives sensory stimuli. This suggests that who we are as individuals, in terms of basic character aspects, plays a role in our perceptual experiences.

A perceptual set is generated from our perceptual hypotheses. It influences how we perceive and interpret sensory information, which explains why our perception does not always accurately match the real world.

Sensory adaptation is the process by which conscious perception of a stimulus decreases over time due to constant exposure. By demonstrating that continuous sensory input does not always reach awareness, it serves as a key concept to help explain the difference between what is merely sensed and what is actually perceived.

Selective attention is the psychological process of focusing on a specific subset of available sensory information while ignoring other distracting stimuli. Because it acts as a filter for incoming sensory data, selective attention helps explain why some environmental stimuli are consciously perceived and others are not.
