Small, uncharged molecules, such as carbon dioxide, can easily cross the membrane using this mechanism.

Simple Diffusion

Facilitated diffusion is a transport process utilized by molecules that cannot cross the membrane bilayer directly via simple diffusion, such as large or charged molecules. In this process, specialized membrane structures, including carriers and channels, ferry these molecules across the plasma membrane.

Facilitated Diffusion

Osmosis is the diffusion of water across a semipermeable membrane. While solutes like dissolved salts and sugars cannot pass through this membrane, water moves from the side with a lower solute concentration to the side with a higher solute concentration until both sides become equal.
