Simplifying a Complex Rational Expression by Using the LCD

To simplify a complex rational expression using the least common denominator, follow a three-step procedure: Step 1. Find the LCD of all the fractions that appear anywhere within the complex rational expression — including those in both the overall numerator and the overall denominator. Step 2. Multiply the entire numerator and the entire denominator of the complex rational expression by this LCD. Because every inner fraction has a denominator that divides into the LCD, this step clears all nested fractions at once. Step 3. Simplify the resulting expression by combining like terms and dividing out any common factors. Unlike the division method — which first consolidates the numerator and denominator into single fractions before dividing — this approach eliminates all inner fractions in a single multiplication step, often providing a more direct path to the simplified result.
