Research done on sociocognitive conflict and it's potential benefits has shown that mastery goals can help one reap the benefits of sociocognitive conflict. In an environment with a disagreeing partner/peer where mastery goals were utilized, participants had a better leaning outcome. This is in relation to an environment where no goals were used or where there was an agreeing partner.  The mastery goal served as a form of conflict regulation.

Social marking is a concept that refers to whether problem structure matches or doesn't match the social rules affiliated with it. This concept explains that the logical structure is not what solely impacts the success of someone solving a problem. The structure of interaction with peer/others involved also matters.

There is also a particular dynamic between teacher and student that guides the formation of ideas. The asymmetrical relations within classroom conversations also helps influence this process of constructing ideas and meaning.
