Solving Direct Variation Problems

To find the equation that relates two variables in a direct variation relationship when one pair of values is known, follow this four-step procedure:

  1. Write the formula for direct variation. Begin with the general equation y=kxy = kx.
  2. Substitute the given values for the variables. Replace xx and yy with the known pair of values.
  3. Solve for the constant of variation. Divide both sides by the known value of xx to isolate kk.
  4. Write the equation that relates xx and yy. Substitute the value of kk back into y=kxy = kx to obtain the specific equation.

Once this equation is established, it can be used to determine the value of yy for any other value of xx.
