The Attributional Process in Memory
Source Monitoring Framework
The Source Monitoring Framework introduced by Marcia Johnson conceives of remembering as the process of attributing experiences to sources. Rather than using abstract tags to determine the source of a memory, people evaluate and attribute memories to sources through decisions that happen during the process of remembering. According to the framework, the experience of remembering memories from different sources will differ according to characteristics of the sources. For example, a video news story is likely to include more visual details in memory than an audio story. fMRI studies have generated supporting evidence by exploring which regions of the brain demonstrate activity while remembering certain information. Visual information tends to activate the visual areas of the brain while auditory information generally activates the auditory cortex.
