In Chapter 31, Poem 3 of Attar's Mokhtar Nameh, two major Sufi themes are explored: absolute helplessness on the spiritual path and the illusion of divine comprehension. The seeker, finding no clear path forward, is left only with the profound anguish of 'drinking blood.' Furthermore, the poem warns that boasting of having 'drunk' the Divine Ocean is a false claim of attainment. The Divine is so unimaginably vast that those making such boasts have not even had a single hair moistened, highlighting the incomprehensibility of the Divine and the delusion of spiritual arrogance.
