Spiritual Poverty as Emptiness of Desire (Murad) and Abandonment of Disposition (Tark al-Tasarruf) in Hujwiri's Kashf al-Mahjub
In Section 3 of the Chapter on Poverty (Bab al-Faqr) of the Kashf al-Mahjub, Hujwiri gathers the sayings of the Sufi masters to define spiritual poverty (faqr) not as material destitution but as emptiness of desire (murad). Citing a later master's dictum that the poor person is not one whose hand is empty of goods and provisions, but one whose nature is empty of desire, he argues that if God grants such a person wealth, wanting either to keep it or to renounce it is still a form of disposition (tasarruf) over what belongs to Another; therefore true poverty is the abandonment of disposition (tark al-tasarruf). He reinforces this with Yahya ibn Muadh's saying that the sign of poverty is the fear of poverty, and notes that the soundness of poverty appears when the servant rests wholly under God's governance rather than clinging to his own will.
