In Section 40 of Jami's Haft Awrang, the tenth discourse on vigilance (sahar), the poet admonishes the seeker who has surrendered consciousness to the sweet slumber of dawn while the morning bird already raises its song. Contrasting the living, song-warmed bird with the sleeper who is 'dead' and frozen, Jami urges one to abandon idle desire, strike a melody of fidelity, and awaken. He then reframes the visible world as a nightly puppet-show staged behind a rust-colored veil: its ever-changing figures are displayed so that the seeker may perceive the power and artistry of the Divine Painter who fashions them. To keep one's eyes nailed shut with sleep until daylight, never lifting the veil to ask what lies behind it or who drew these forms, is presented as shameful spiritual heedlessness. The passage thus binds literal wakefulness at dawn to the mystical alertness needed to read creation as a sign pointing to its Creator.
