St. Louis encephalitis is a rare form of encephalitis that occurs most commonly in the Ohio-Mississippi river basin of the U.S. Famously there was an outbreak in 1975 where over 2000 cases were found. Many symptoms were mild flu-like symptoms.

West Nile encephalitis is endemic in the Middle East, Africa and Asia. When it spread to the United States in 1999, over 35,000 cases were ifentified and 1400 deaths resulted. Most infected individuals do not have symptoms or mild flu-like symptoms. Some develop neurological diseases as well.
