During stage 1, people would normally have large amount if HIV in their blood and are very contagious. Some people may have flu-like symptoms, some may not experience anything at all.

According to the CDC, there are three stages of HIV infections:
- Stage 1 – Acute HIV Infection
- Stage 2 – Chronic HIV Infection
- Stage 3 - Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS)

Stage 1 of HIV Infection

During stage 2, HIV is still active, however, it reproduces at a slower rate than before. Without medicine, this stage can last more than ten years without any symptoms, however, the disease can still be transmitted. Afterwards, the amount of HIV will increase again and the cells responsible for the immune response will decrease. The person will start experiencing symptoms and move onto stage 3.  With medicine, people would not move onto stage 3 of the infection. 

Stage 2 of HIV Infection 

During stage 3, people are more likely to catch and experience severe illnesses as their immune system is sacrificed.
