Concept

Stress, anxiety, and depression among undergraduate students during the COVID-19 pandemic: Methods

A total of 1,412 students (male=389, female=1027, queer=17) were surveyed via a self-administered online survey. The vast majority of the sample was female (73%), white (86%) and <25 years old (95%).

There are five key outcome variables that were explored in this study:

  • Stress level: measured using the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS).
  • Anxiety level: measured using the General Anxiety Disorder 7-item scale (GAD-7).
  • Depression level: measured using the Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System (PROMIS).
  • The extent to which students used on-campus mental health services during the academic year: measured on a scale of 1 (never) to 5 (very often).
  • The extent to which students used off-campus mental health services during the academic year: measured on a scale of 1 (never) to 5 (very often).

The study also collected information about student demographics, including gender, race or ethnicity, age, class level, first-generation student status, family income, residency, GPAs, and perceived stigma about seeking counseling.

Limitations:

  • The study does not claim a causal relationship.
  • The study may not be applicable to students in other institutions or states.
