Whitney, Warschausky, and Peterson (2019) conducted a cross-sectional study of common co-morbidities in children with cerebral palsy (CP), including neurodevelopmental disorders such as ASD and ADHD. They found that children with CP have higher odds of mental health disorders than children without CP, associated with differences in physical activity, sleep, and pain. Increasing or maintaining physical activity was linked to reduced risk of depression, though pain and movement difficulties often lead children with CP toward a sedentary lifestyle. A limitation is that the study did not examine the social, emotional, and communication difficulties (including speech problems) that children with CP face, or how these contribute to mental health, leaving out part of the picture of daily life for a child with CP.
