Study 1
The first study focused on the factor structure of the United States Mental Health Advisory Team-Combat Experiences Scale (MHAT-CES). This scale has identified three to seven-component models of combat stressors based on the number of items included. Based on the support from previous research that highlighted how potentially morally injurious experiences are different from other types of combat exposure, it was proposed that the items concerning PMIEs will have a separate component from the MHAT-CES model. Participants who had deployed from Afghanistan were asked to fill out a survey that asked them the frequency of experiencing a combat-related stressor. The highest correlations were between experiencing dangerous environments and PMIEs. The lowest correlations were between being exposed to people who were dead and injured and life threats.
