Definition of Substantial Gainful Activity (SGA) Used by the SSA
Substantial Gainful Activity (SGA) describes work activity levels and income that the Social Security Administration (SSA) classifies as substantial and gainful. Gainful activity is work performed for pay, work of a nature generally performed for pay, or work intended for profit. Typically, an income of around $1,310 a month (as of 2021) for full-time work demonstrates SGA, though this numerical estimate does not apply to individuals who are blind.
