Subtle Nudges can Increase Discernment of COVID-19 Misinformation
Study 2 looked at whether an accuracy nudge made subjects more likely to share true headlines over false ones (increased sharing discernment).
- Discernment in the treatment group was 2.8x higher than in the control group
- The effect was not significantly moderated by CRT scores, scientific knowledge, partisanship, distance to a COVID hotspot, or tendency to seek medical treatment.
- Results suggest that an accuracy nudge prompts the reader to consider accuracy when deciding to share a headline.
- Headlines that were most likely rated to be true from study 1 had higher increases in sharing likelihood in the treatment group.
