Subtracting 20 − 14.65

Subtract 2014.6520 - 14.65 using the decimal subtraction procedure:

  1. Align the decimal points — write 2020 above 14.6514.65 so that the decimal points line up vertically. Because 2020 is a whole number, place the decimal point immediately after the 00 to get 20.20. .
  2. Insert placeholder zeros — the number 20.20. has no decimal digits while 14.6514.65 has two, so append two zeros to get 20.0020.00. This is valid because 20=20.0020 = 20.00.
  3. Subtract and place the decimal point — subtract column by column from right to left, borrowing (regrouping) as needed. Working through the borrowing: the ones digit 00 must lend to the tenths and hundredths places, which in turn requires borrowing from the tens digit. After regrouping, the column-by-column subtraction yields 5.355.35.

The result is 2014.65=5.3520 - 14.65 = 5.35. This example highlights a common special case: when subtracting a decimal from a whole number, the whole number's decimal point and placeholder zeros must be written explicitly before the subtraction can proceed.
