Summary of the Study

This study investigated the role of sex hormones on the fluctuation of both sexuality and mood for those who menstruate. 21 participants were blood sampled every day at 8am, checking their levels of sex hormones such as: estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, androstenedione, cortisol, and more. The group of participants was divided into two sub-groups: PCs (those with premenstrual complaints; n=11) and NPCs (no premenstrual complaints; n=10), under which all samples were analyzed across one menstrual cycle.

Overall, it seemed as though the peak of testosterone during the ovulation cycle was found to be the cause for fluctuation in sexuality. Additionally, PCs were found to have higher levels of adverse mood symptoms overall in comparison to NPCs, who tended to have higher levels of progesterone.
