Short Answer

Suppose you are a researcher conducting a study comparing how reading from a digital screen versus a printed book affects comprehension. A participant has just completed the study in the digital screen condition. Write a brief 1- to 3-sentence debriefing explanation directed to this participant that fully satisfies the requirement of disclosing the research design.

Question: Suppose you are a researcher conducting a study comparing how reading from a digital screen versus a printed book affects comprehension. A participant has just completed the study in the digital screen condition. Write a brief 1- to 3-sentence debriefing explanation directed to this participant that fully satisfies the requirement of disclosing the research design.

Sample answer: In this study, we are investigating how the format of reading material affects text comprehension. While you completed the reading task on a digital screen, other participants read the same text from a printed book so that we can compare comprehension scores between the two formats.

Key points:

  • State the primary research question clearly to the participant.
  • Acknowledge the specific condition or variation the participant experienced.
  • Explain the alternative experimental condition or variation that the participant did not personally experience.

Rubric: The response must be 1 to 3 sentences long and must apply the disclosure rule by including: 1) a statement of the primary research question (how reading format affects comprehension); 2) an explanation of the condition the participant experienced (reading on a digital screen); 3) an explanation of the condition they did not experience (reading a printed book) to reveal the complete design.
