Case Study

Sustaining Community Garden Maintenance

A neighborhood community garden is run by volunteers. All volunteers share the harvest, but the garden's success depends on everyone contributing to tasks like weeding and watering. Recently, a few members have been taking produce without helping with the work. The garden committee is considering two proposals to address this issue:

Proposal 1: Post a large sign at the garden entrance that says, "A healthy garden depends on everyone's help! Please do your part."

Proposal 2: Implement a public logbook where members record their completed tasks each week. The logbook is visible to all members, and the committee will privately speak to members who consistently have no entries.

Analyze these two proposals. Which proposal is more likely to be effective in increasing and sustaining participation in garden maintenance, and why? Explain your reasoning based on principles of group cooperation.
