Svedberg Unit
The Svedberg unit (abbreviated as S) is a measure of sedimentation in an ultracentrifuge. It is used to quantify the size of cellular structures, such as ribosomes, and is based on a combination of the structure's size, shape, and surface qualities. For example, prokaryotic ribosomes have a size of S, whereas eukaryotic cytoplasmic ribosomes are S.
