Prokaryotic Ribosomes

Prokaryotic ribosomes are structures located in the cytoplasm responsible for protein synthesis. They are constructed from proteins and ribosomal RNA (rRNA). Prokaryotic ribosomes are referred to as 70{}70S ribosomes due to their overall size of 70{}70S. A complete 70{}70S prokaryotic ribosome is composed of two subunits: a small 30{}30S subunit (which is approximately half the size of the large subunit) and a large 50{}50S subunit. Although bacterial and archaeal ribosomes are the same size, they consist of different proteins and rRNA molecules, with archaeal versions sharing more structural similarities with eukaryotic ribosomes than with bacterial ones.
