Synchronous versus asynchronous online teaching of physics during the COVID-19 pandemic: Summary

Online learning can be offered in many different formats and there may be benefits/consequences of different modes of meeting and communication.

Synchronous online learning includes lectures and discussions which are scheduled at a specific date and time. Synchronous online learning usually occurs over video platforms such as zoom. Synchronous online learning more closely resembles in-person learning such that students must virtually attend learning sessions at the specified date and time.

Asynchronous online learning allows students to learn course material at their own pace and at whatever date and time they prefer. It usually includes pre-recorded lectures available to access independently, as well as discussions/assignments that can be completed at their own pace.

According to a 2018 study by Yao and Ho, when learners are on an educational website hosted by a highly respected institution, group, or individual, they are more likely to click on hyperlinks when additional cues are attached to them (p<.005). For every additional web page viewed under these circumstances, participants answered an average of .30 more questions correctly (95% CI above zero) when asked open ended questions about information they were presented on web pages.

AODs are a type of educational environment that exists within online learning platforms. Their main purpose is to provide students with a space where they can create their own understanding and ideas within their own minds and physical surroundings. Additionally, they offer opportunities for students to interact with others in a community of learners, where they can collaborate and construct knowledge together.
